Dopamine Squirts, Forex Trading Robots, and Your Ability To Make Money From Home
Whew! I know my subject sounds a bit long-winded, but I crave your indulgence. That being said, I would like to start with the first one; dopamine squirts. Dopamine is regarded as a catecholamine neurotransmitter that occurs in a wide variety of animals, including humans.
I will spare you the long scientific explanation, which I won’t even pretend to understand anyway. What scientist seems to agree on however, is that a dopamine squirt explains our primitive impulse to respond to immediate opportunities and threats.
Lo and behold, these opportunities often come to us in the form of emails, instant messages, phone calls, and other electronic message. Our brains tend to become over-stimulated by constant and rigorous exposure to information coming from these sources, and to which we have developed an insatiable desire to respond immediately.
When it comes to Online businesses, and our quest to earn a living through the Internet, the exposure to these stimulants become magnified, as we become the consummate marketers no matter where we are, and what we are doing. Here is a case in point.
Yesterday (a Sunday), I was enjoying a late evening supper with my family. Normally, I get few phone phone calls, on a Sunday, and I’m getting to like that. But, now I was getting a call from someone in the USA who want to talk to me. It turned out to be someone who responded to one of my online advertisements for my Infinity Down-line business, and just had a few questions to ask before making a final decision. I learned a long time ago, that in spite of the massive reach of the Internet, you should still be available to talk to people you are trying to sell something. It makes for better business relationships right from the start.
My new down-line member just had a few basic questions, which I was happy to answer for him, and in a few minutes he became a paid member of my I.D. business. In fact, as I am always advertising for other members of my team, using a rotator, his first point of contact was another member of my down-line, who did not answer the phone. He called me back to ask if he could simply sign up with me since my other team member was not available to him.
Here is my point. You may not always be available, but you should make appropriate arrangements to get back to people when they contact you. It is difficult to build a people-business without putting in place, a principle-based system for speaking to people. Your customers will always be people, not computers. People are the most important part of any business, as they are the ones who will actually make the decision to either buy from you or not buy from you.
If you are selling a product or service which requires monthly subscriptions, make yourself available to people, with clearly-stated business hours. They will feel better knowing they can contact you, if and when they need to do so.
But, you cannot be available to people twenty four hours per day. At some point you will want to eat dinner with your family, go on vacations, do your charity work, go to church or mosque, or simply get away for a while. On story in today’s Times digest ( Monday, June 6, 2010), had one frustrated wife of an Online Entrepreneur, making the following comment about her internet-wired hubby. “ It seems like he can no longer be fully in the moment.”. This kind of constant dopamine rush is the reason people are constantly glued to their blackberries or iPhones. It also explains why people take their laptops to the beach, and seem to lurch on the edge of insanity if the Internet is unavailable for 30 minutes!
It’s great to make a living online, but it should not consume your life! We see stories of people making $100K a month, but it begs the question; “do they have a life?”. One way to mitigate against technology taking over your life, is to create systems or business models that can be fully automated.
